A Demonstration - Delicate Petals ...(continued)
4. Add Shadow Washes and Stamens:
Add the deeper shadows using a mix of Schmincke Ultramarine Blue Finest, Alizarin
Crimson and Maimeriblu Primary Yellow. I vary the amount of each pigment according
to the shadow color I see before me; some of the shadows are warm (yellow) while some
are cooler (purple). Because shadows have a variety of color within them, start with the
lightest mix - a predominantly yellow mix of shadow color in this case. Wet the shadow
area and drop in the pigment where the shadow is most dense. Allow to dry after each application then soften the edges with a damp brush of clear water. Softly blend the shadow colors into each other so there is a gradation from one color to the next. To
achieve this, prime the entire shadow area, then re-wet only the area you wish to cover
plus a small margin more to allow the color to flare into the neighboring shadow color.
Lay in the remaining shadow colors with a more blue or more purple mix. I used Cadmium Yellow Deep for the local color in the stamens; I then emphasized them with
Schmincke Permanent Red Orange in the shadow and on the base. A touch of Ultramarine
Blue Finest added to the red and yellow mix slightly deepens some of the stamens,
adding definition where needed. The cast shadows from the stamens are the same variety of mixes used for the petal shadows; remember to make some warm and some cool.
This gives variety and authenticity to your painting.
